CHICAGO, IL – A physician at Mount Sinai Hospital has tested positive for COVID-19. The doctor developed respiratory symptoms while at work, was evaluated by our Employee Health department and was sent home from work Monday, March 16. Test results have come back positive and this individual is now in isolation at home. While on shift, this individual, as well as all other staff, followed proper procedures for use of personal protective equipment (PPE) to minimize potential exposure for both staff and patients. Sinai Health System is now working to identify the staff and patients this doctor came in contact with to notify them and coordinate any appropriate testing for potential COVID-19 infection.

In consideration of patient privacy, we can offer no further details regarding the doctor’s condition.

Sinai Health System has put directives in place for all caregivers to stay home from work if they are sick and, in accordance with recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), initiated patient, and staff screening procedures this week. All visitors have been restricted at Sinai Health System.

To date, Sinai Health System has had no patients test positive for COVID-19 at either of its acute care hospitals -- Mount Sinai Hospital and Holy Cross Hospital. But, given the rapid spread of the virus in Chicago and Illinois, it was likely that a caregiver at Sinai, as has happened at other area hospitals, would eventually contract COVID-19. We are continuing to monitor the health of our caregivers and directing caregivers with any symptoms to stay home from work.

We place the highest priority on the health and safety of our patients, visitors and caregivers. We are working as quickly as possible to identify, contact and isolate all staff and patients this physician came in contact with during shifts on Saturday night and Monday morning. We will continue to work with Chicago Department of Public Health and Illinois Department of Public Health to ensure that we are taking all necessary precautions to keep our patients and caregivers safe.
