Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health

Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health (CABH) is an outpatient therapy program for children, adolescents and their families. Psychologists, social workers, child-development specialists, psychiatrists and graduate students in psychology all provide services.

CABH evaluates and treats most childhood and adolescent psychological disorders, and provides outpatient mental-health services for children up to age 18. Services also are provided for adult caretakers dealing with issues related to those of the child.

CABH has two divisions.

  • Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (CAP) offers services in English and Spanish to children and families - with or without insurance - living in the Pilsen-Little Village area.
  • Under the Rainbow (UTR) provides treatment for most childhood disorders and specializes in the evaluation and treatment of child abuse and neglect.

Services Provided

CABH's mission parallels Mount Sinai Hospital's promise to provide "efficient and compassionate delivery of quality health care to our patients, regardless of their ability to pay."

Both CAP and UTR offer:

  • Evaluation of the need for psychological services
  • Individual therapy, including case management and child advocacy
  • Family therapy
  • Play therapy
  • Parent-child assessment and interventions
  • Psychiatric evaluation
  • Psychotropic medication management and consultation
  • ADHD assessment and treatment

UTR also offers:

  • Evaluation of abuse and neglect
  • Zero-to-Five developmental evaluation
  • Parent training for behavior management problems

Referral Sources

Referrals to CABH come from:

  • Physicians
  • School personnel
  • Parents
  • Child protection agency workers
  • Hospital staff
  • Clergy
  • Concerned adults
  • Police

Any adult who suspects that a child or adolescent may be the victim of physical, sexual or emotional abuse or neglect is encouraged to make a referral to CABH or call for further information.

Multilingual Care

Spanish-speaking therapists offer individual and family therapy for monolingual Spanish-speaking clients living in the Pilsen-Little Village area. For other non-English-speaking clients, evaluations and medication management can be provided in Spanish, American Sign Language, Russian and Bosnian with the help of a hospital interpreter. However, use of an interpreter for ongoing therapy is not advised, and such clients will be referred elsewhere.

Prevention

CABH takes a proactive approach to education and awareness in an effort to prevent child abuse and re-abuse, as well as other psychiatric disorders.

Services include:

Community outreach through a speakers bureau for schools, agencies, churches and parent groups Consultation and therapeutic services to Head Start and day-care centers, to maximize early identification of behavioral health needs

Payment

CABH follows the hospital policy of providing care to uninsured clients. Public aid is accepted. Individuals with private insurance and those who have a medical card but are enrolled in an HMO should contact their insurance provider to determine whether their benefits allow them to be seen in our program.
