Message from the Chairman, Gary Merlotti, MD
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the General Surgical Residency website for the University of Illinois at Mount Sinai training program. The mission for Mount Sinai is to improve the health of the people and communities we serve. In order to accomplish this goal, our surgeons must be of the highest caliber and capable of providing high quality services across a broad range of disciplines. For the residents this means exposure to a wide range of learning opportunities working with outstanding faculty who are truly committed to the educational process. We are very proud of our residents and their accomplishments and have every confidence that a surgeon trained here will continue to provide surgical services at the highest level to their community as well.
Message from the Program Director, Stephen R. Wise, MD
Thank you for taking an interest in our residency program. We spend a lot of time and effort to find the “right” residents for our program. With over 250 General Surgery residencies in the US I know it is just as difficult for you to choose the “right” residency. I hope that this information helps you in your decision!
We are an academic affiliated, community hospital based residency program located just southwest of downtown Chicago. We are fully accredited by the Surgical Residency Review Committee and admit 3-4 residents per year to the program. The majority of our graduates go on to surgical fellowships with a minority going directly into private practice. Our program is capable of supporting either path with an elective research year offered if it fits your career plans.
One of the strengths of the program rests in its primary teaching location. Mt. Sinai Hospital is a very busy Level 1 adult and pediatric Trauma Center caring for an underserved urban population. This setting ensures that our residents have very early and extensive hands on experience in learning surgical skills and decision making. Additional strength lies in the department’s cultural environment. The collegial atmosphere between faculty, residents, and leadership make moral very high within the residency.
If the University of Illinois at Mt. Sinai Hospital General Surgery residency appeals to you, we encourage you to apply through ERAS. As we typically receive many more applications than we could possibly interview candidates, we narrow the field through a screening process and offer approximately 80 interviews per year.
We appreciate your notice of our program and hope that the information contained on these web pages encourages you to apply. We take this process as seriously as you do, and would be glad to answer any questions you might have.
Stephen R. Wise, MD, FACS, FRCS(C)
