of the elective to confirm scheduling. Written cancellations must be received 2 weeks prior to the scheduled rotation or
$100.00 fine will be assessed.
The student will report to the Residency Office on the 4th floor by 8:30 a.m. [on the first day of the rotation and
every morning thereafter for the duration of the rotation] and remain until 4:30 p.m. or later as work/patient care
dictates. The student may park free in Douglas Park, directly across the street from Schwab. The park is patrolled by
security from 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Student Doctors must display a photo ID indicating their status as a student doctor.
Schwab Rehab Hospital offers an elective rotation in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation to senior medical school
students provided their medical school covers all malpractice insurance during the rotation. Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital
will also accept a senior resident physician from another program if the resident has a valid medical license and full
malpractice insurance coverage provided by their institution. All benefits and stipends must be provided by the outside
institution. The duration of a typical elective is four weeks.
Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital & Care Network is a private not-for-profit 125-bed freestanding rehabilitation hospital
located on Chicago’s West Side. Schwab offers complete individualized comprehensive inpatient and outpatient programs for
people with disabilities. Our clinical programming spans the entire range of inpatient and ambulatory rehabilitation care.
We have specialty programs in brain and spinal cord injury, stroke, sports medicine, pediatrics, amputee medicine,
occupational rehabilitation, and general rehabilitation. Schwab also provides comprehensive rehabilitation services for
children with disabilities through Kids Rehab, a program in partnership with our affiliates: La Rabida Children’s Hospital
and Research Center, and The University of Chicago Children’s Hospital.
The student will be assigned, on the first day of the rotation to the inpatient service of a teaching attending by the
Program Director, and will accompany the attending and resident physician on inpatient rounds, and Outpatient Clinic, if
applicable.
The medical student, at some point during their rotation, will learn about patients with brain and spinal cord injury,
stroke, amputation, neurological, and musculoskeletal disease/medicine. In addition, by attending patient staffing (team
conference) with the attending and resident physicians, nurses, therapists, and other allied health team members, the medical
student will learn about the comprehensive treatment of a rehabilitation patient. The student will have ample exposure to
rehabilitation medicine, learning from nationally and internationally known teaching faculty who will provide a comprehensive
educational experience emphasizing both physical medicine and rehabilitation. Our 3-year ACGME fully accredited residency-
training program, based at Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital, is academically affiliated with the University of Chicago, Pritzker
School of Medicine.
Students are also expected to participate in educational activities, such as attending resident lectures, in order to foster
their education. Resident Lectures, which include our Grand Rounds lecture series, are held every Monday from 1:00-4:00 p.m.
