Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital is a free standing, 92 licensed-bed, rehabilitation
hospital and is a proud member of Sinai Health System.
Schwab's Residency Program
Schwab’s three-year Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R)
training program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate
Medical Education and is affiliated with the University of Chicago, Pritzker
School of Medicine. The diversity of our patient population, rotation sites,
and dedicated teaching attendings, provides an outstanding residency experience.
PGY II Experience Includes:
- Stroke rehabilitation
- Orthopedic rehabilitation
- Amputation rehabilitation
- Pediatric rehabilitation
- Brain injury rehabilitation
- Spinal cord injury rehabilitation
- Outpatient clinic experience
PGY III Experience Includes:
- A multifaceted community based hospital experience at Evanston Hospital: inpatient rehabilitation, consults, and outpatient clinics including lymphedema, musculoskeletal, amputee
- Musculoskeletal and sports medicine at University of Illinois Sports Medicine Clinic
- Rheumatology outpatient clinic at University of Illinois
- Neurosurgery outpatient clinic at Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital
- Spasticity clinic at Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital
- Chronic pain management at the University of Chicago
- Electrodiagnosis at Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital, Roseland Community Hospital, Union Clinic in Chicago
- Inpatient rehabilitation consults at the University of Chicago
PGY IV Experience Includes:
- Inpatient and outpatient pediatric rehabilitation at La Rabida Hospital, University of Chicago and Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital
- Electrodiagnosis at Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital, Evanston Hospital, Jessie Brown Veteran’s Affairs Hospital, University of Illinois
- Subacute rehabilitation at Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital
- Inpatient rehabilitation consults at Level I Trauma Center, Mt. Sinai Hospital
- Chronic pain elective

Examples of electives completed by former residents:
- International rehabilitation (following earthquake and tsunami in Pakistan)
- Medical acupuncture course
- Integrative medicine with Dr. Andrew Weil at the University of Arizona
- Palliative care at Northwestern Memorial Hospital
- Women’s health clinic at the Rehabilitation Institute at Chicago
- Sports Medicine
Didactics:
Attending physicians hold daily teaching conferences for the PGYII residents. All residents attend a weekly lecture series that comprises the 18-month core curriculum. Grand Rounds occur once a month. All residents also participate in a musculoskeletal focused 8-week gross anatomy program.
Research:
Research opportunities abound! All PGY II, III and IV residents have four administrative days per year to attend professional conferences. All residents that present at conferences will be financially supported to attend. The number of conferences is unlimited.

- Fifteen days vacation plus three personal days annually

- Administrative time and financial support available for research publications and presentations
- Additional administrative time for conferences and interviews are available for Senior residents
Applying for Residency:
Applications to Schwab are submitted via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Applicants who complete one year of accredited training (surgery, internal medicine, transitional year, family practice, pediatrics) are eligible to apply.
