OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY
Schwab's occupational therapists help individuals become as self-sufficient as possible by working on their activities of daily living - like getting out of bed, dressing, brushing teeth or doing the laundry. Occupational therapists also use exercises to help patients reach their fullest potential. These can include hand and arm exercises to improve strength or coordination.
PHYSICAL THERAPY
Schwab's physical therapists are part of a comprehensive rehabilitation program with a strong interdisciplinary focus. Together with the entire interdisciplinary team, our physical therapists work closely with each patient and his or her family to establish realistic, functional outcome goals. Physical therapy goals are aimed at resolving physical impairments, improving functional mobility and returning each patient to his or her optimal level of functional independence at home and in the community.
Following an initial evaluation, Schwab's physical therapists design an individualized treatment program consisting of therapeutic exercises, aquatic therapy, education and, if needed, functional retraining on the use of assistive devices, orthotics and prosthetics.
Schwab also offers aquatic therapy, another form of physical therapy. This soothing low stress therapy is available for both adults and pediatric patients. Individuals are evaluated by a physical therapist to determine if aquatic therapy would be a beneficial treatment. Aquatic therapy is used in conjunction with land therapy. It has been used to treat a wide variety of diagnoses. The buoyancy of exercising in warm water set at a therapeutic temperature makes movement easier and the warmth of the water relaxes tight muscles. The water helps support a patient's body allowing them to perform activities with more independence in the pool than on land. The pool is also equipped with a lift that allows patients unable to walk to safely enter and exit the pool. Additional benefits include decreasing spasticity, making it easier for patients to stand & walk after a stroke, brain injury, or spinal cord injury. It also decreases pain for patients with arthritis.
SPEECH THERAPY AND AUDIOLOGY
Speech is only part of what Schwab's speech therapists focus on. When someone has a stroke, it may paralyze or weaken muscles that assist in swallowing. The speech therapists determine that the patient can safely swallow and improve their function with care strategies and exercises. For patients with language or speech difficulties, our speech therapists address all areas of communication including language, speech clarity, thinking, reading and written expression.
Our Audiologists concentrate on basic hearing issues for patients ranging from small children to the elderly. Schwab's Audiology services include hearing evaluations and providing/fitting hearing aids. Through the Theo Leffman Program of the Jewish Federation of Chicago, patients who need hearing aids but can't afford them, can get hearing aids at a price they can afford.
Because our therapists work together, the staff are able to share ideas with one another on how to provide the best care possible.
