C.A.M.P. Schwab
Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital, the Chicago Park District and Dominick's Finer
Foods have teamed-up for the past two years to provide sports and recreational instruction for children
with physical disabilities. Athletic participation during childhood and adolescence has been shown to improve physical and emotional well-being, self-esteem, discipline, and self-determination. Many children with disabilities have athletic aspirations but see few opportunities to become involved in sports activities. C.A.M.P. Schwab is an adapted sports camp that provides children with basic instruction in the rules and techniques of various activities in a fun, affirming environment. Our purpose is to encourage children with mobility impairments to view themselves as active and physically capable so that they continue to seek out future opportunities for athletic participation.
C.A.M.P. Schwab will take place Monday through Friday during the week of August 8-12, 2005
from 9:30am until 3:30pm. Twenty-five participants between the ages of 8 and 13 will be admitted. Children must have a mobility impairment and must be able to follow directions. Transportation is available for all campers if their family desires. Lunch and two snacks will be provided. A medical doctor, physical and occupational therapists, and a nurse will be present during camp.
Children will participate in the following activities:
- Wheelchair basketball
- Wheelchair soccer
- Adapted Horseback Riding
- Swimming
- Adapted wall climbing
- Adapted Cycling
- Fishing
