"Schwab care goes beyond physical and emotional health. For many of our patients this may mean facing a new life in which theyll have to choose something other than physical work."

Schwab’s Community Technology Center
In 2006, Schwab received funding from the state of Illinois to establish a formal computer lab, or “Community Technology Center” (CTC), for individuals with disabilities from Schwab and the general disability community. The CTC provides adaptive technology, including screen reading software, large button keyboards and roller mice for individuals with limited hand and finger mobility. In 2008, more than 150 people with disabilities utilized the CTC.
As the world becomes increasingly reliant on technology, we recognize that it is necessary for people with disabilities to develop computer skills. The purpose of the CTC is to bring technology to low-income youth and adults with a variety of disabilities in the communities that Schwab serves. Our goal is for participants to gain computer literacy skills, allowing them to competitively participate in future educational or vocational pursuits. Schwab houses the only CTC on the south or west side of Chicago that is fully accessible to people with disabilities.
Schwab’s CTC provides several different classes including:
- Hardware Basics (for first-time users of computers)
- Microsoft Word
- Internet
- e-mail
- PowerPoint
- Resume writing
In addition, the computer lab is open to the community, Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
