Support Groups
Schwab’s Support Groups provide an opportunity for our patients and their families to
share their adjustment experiences following discharge from the hospital. Schwab offers a number of support
groups catered for specific populations.
Support Group for Hispanics with Disabilities in Spanish
The Hispanic with Disabilities Support Group was developed to address the unique needs of this population.
The group serves as a resource for those living with a disability by sharing life experiences and
information with others in Spanish. Group participants will develop leadership and advocacy skills which
will allow them the opportunity to engage in active decision making in their communities.
Grupo de Apoyo para Hispanos con Discapacidad en Español
El grupo de Apoyo para Hispanos con Discapacidad fue creado para enfrentar las necesidades de esta población.
El grupo de apoyo, sirve como recurso para aquellas personas que viven con una discapacidad, en e,l se comparten
experiencias e información con otras personas en el lenguaje común, el Español. Los participantes podrán
desarrollar actitudes de liderazgo y abogacía los cuales les darán la oportunidad de involucrarse en las
decisiones de sus comunidades y de sus hogares.

Brain Injury Support Group
Schwab Rehab hosts a support group for persons with brain injuries The Brain Injury Association provides a
monthly support group on the 4 th Saturday of the month.
The Brain Injury Association of Illinois welcomes everyone to attend any support group.
Please call the office for additional information regarding support group activities.
Why Attend a Support Group Meeting?
The purpose of a support group is sharing with and supporting another for the mutual benefit of the total
group. Some elements of a support group are:
- Active, involved listening to others
- Providing an atmosphere where positive and negative views can be expressed without being judged or labeled
- An atmosphere that promotes a sense of caring
- An opportunity to identify needs and to problem solve with others
- Providing an atmosphere to explore inner feelings
- An awareness of common needs and strengths
- Receiving and giving opportunities for others to be understood
- A place to find courage and to take risks
- Education and information is shared among the group
