Handcycling
Schwab’s Handcycling Program, S.P.I.N.. (Schwab’s Program for Innovative Non-Competitive Cycling), offers adaptive recreational opportunities to individuals with mobility impairments throughout Chicago. Schwab is home to the first and only formal handcycling program in Chicago. S.P.I.N. is non-competitive, free of charge and provides a social outlet for amateur and experienced handcyclists. This program is offered over eight months, from March to October, with various rides offered throughout this time period. These rides include both organized rides and informal rides around Chicago neighborhoods. S.P.I.N. is supported by volunteer staff from Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital and Chicagoland’s cycling community.
***Volunteer staff from Schwab and Chicagoland’s cycling community support SPIN, and we are always seeking interested volunteers. ***
Boccia
Boccia is a sport with ancient Greek origins. It was developed from a traditional ball tossing game by Italians in the 16th century. Today, Boccia is unique to the Paralympic Games, where it is played by wheelchair athletes with severe cerebral palsy and related neurological disorders. The sport is a test of muscle control and accuracy, demanding extreme skill and concentration at the highest level.
How to play – and win
Boccia is played on a long, narrow court by individuals, pairs and teams. The goal is to throw or bowl a ball so that it lands as close as possible to the target ball, called a ‘jack’.
