McKesson Grant of $25,000 funds over 20 Neopuff Resuscitators for Sinai Children’s Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

The McKesson Foundation recently awarded Sinai Children’s Hospital with a $25,000 grant to purchase Neopuff Infant Resuscitators (made by Fisher and Paykal Healthcare) for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. This state-of-the-art resuscitator automatically delivers an even flow of oxygen at lower pressures to the babies’ lungs. This reduces pressure trauma to the lungs and general lung damage. Also, these resuscitators can help wean a baby off a ventilator sooner than the resuscitating bags that are currently used in the unit.

This gift from McKesson will impact 400 babies per year in Sinai’s NICU for many years. Overall, the Neopuff Infant Resuscitators will provide a safer and more regulated way for Sinai’s NICU nurses to provide oxygen to the neonates and keep them alive. Our infants will be weaned off the ventilator sooner than they are now and our infants will experience fewer traumas to their air sacks. The Neopuff Resuscitators will enhance the care the nurses provide to the neonates and will serve as vital equipment in Sinai’s NICU for many years. Dennis Vickers, MD, Chairman of Pediatrics adds, “We predict these resuscitators will contribute to the overall healthy development of our babies’ lungs, and thus improve their overall development. When a baby does survive trauma to the lungs, the consequences can affect the child for the rest of his or her life. Thus, this equipment has the ability to improve the quality of life and overall development of our tiniest and most at-risk babies for the rest of their lives.
