Educational Opportunities with Schwab

Nursing Education
Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital is a teaching facility supports nursing education though clinical opportunities for LPNs and RNs. We provide a small group clinical for six to nine students per group, accompanied by an instructor on all specialty units for fundamentals and a light medical or surgery rotation.

We also offer master’s level leadership preceptor experiences upon request.

Graduate Education
Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital sponsors an ACGME-accredited  three-year physical medicine and rehabilitation residency program. The program hosts five residents per year, for a total of 15 residents currently. Schwab Faculty Associates, the rehabilitation teaching attending physicians, are all board certified, and most are subspecialty certified in PM&R. Schwab is an academic affiliate of the University of Chicago and partners with multiple healthcare providers and organizations to ensure a robust clinical experience for our trainees. In addition to working at Schwab, a freestanding rehabilitation hospital, trainees rotate at the University of Chicago, North Shore University HealthSystem, the University of Illinois, as well as with practitioners in private practice. By the time residents have completed their training at Schwab, they are well qualified to practice independently in any area of rehabilitation medicine. Recently, our residents have matched in sports medicine fellowships, pain management fellowships, and spinal cord injury medicine, while many have gone directly into private practice as well as academic practice. We are proud to have achieved a 100% Board pass rate for first time takers in the last few years.

Undergraduate Education
Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital gives medical students the opportunity to rotate for four weeks in our freestanding rehabilitation hospital. Students gain exposure to various aspects of rehabilitation medicine, including inpatient and outpatient care. Outpatient clinics may include spinal cord injury, pediatrics, pain management, amputation and prosthetics, brain injury and spasticity management. Students will also have the opportunity to longitudinally follow patients to gain a better understanding of the impact of interdisciplinary care for an individual with a disability. Students are welcome to attend Thursday morning didactics and participate in "lunch and learn,” an informal, daily, educational experience led by our attending physicians. Students are generally paired with one resident and one attending physician for any given experience. Schwab is proud to host both DO and MD students.

Therapist Education
Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital is a licensed Continuing Education Provider under the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation for the professions of Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech-Language Pathology.

As a teaching institution, defined by our PM & R Residency program, Schwab Rehabilitation Services is also affiliated with over 30 different universities with accredited therapy programs. This allows us to host PT, PTA, OT, COTA, Speech, and Audiology students throughout the year who are completing clinical fieldwork and internships. Many staff therapists are Certified Clinical Instructors, meaning they have chosen to receive additional training in how to best mentor and coach students. We offer students a rich learning experience, often with opportunities to rotate through the continuum of care of therapy services that is provided throughout Sinai Health System. Each year, dozens of students come to Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital for their student clinical experiences.

Rehabilitation Research Programs
Research opportunities abound at Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital, where both residents and patients can participate in valuable research efforts. As a resident, you may attend conferences; as a patient, you may qualify for a research program.

All PGY II, III and IV residents have four administrative days per year to attend professional conferences, and all residents that present at conferences will be financially supported to attend. The number of conferences is unlimited.

In addition to supporting residents in their research, Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital also sometimes participates in various Chicago research programs.
