Brain Injury

The Schwab brain injury team provides inpatient and outpatient medical rehabilitation to adolescents and adults with brain injuries due to:

  • Trauma
  • Brain oxygen deprivation
  • Abnormalities of brain circulation, including aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations
  • Brain tumors

Inpatient and outpatient brain rehabilitation typically involves a team comprised of:

  • Physiatrist (a physician specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation, with specialized fellowship training in brain injury)
  • Physical, occupational, recreational and speech therapists
  • Rehabilitation nurses
  • Rehabilitation psychologists, case managers, and social workers

The team focuses on recovery of movement, balance, daily living skills such as dressing and eating, memory, judgment and communication. Psychologists are particularly important in brain injury recovery, providing accurate diagnoses of behavioral concerns, adjustment therapies, and family understanding. Re-entry into the community is aided by outings, peer mentors, vocational counseling, and support groups. Schwab’s brain injury team is committed to lifelong care and follow-up, and partners with Brain Injury Association of Illinois and New Focus outpatient day treatment program to facilitate successful long-term integration into the community.
