Tribute to Lawndale Christian pediatrician killed in Afghanistan

Release date

Thursday, April 24th 2014

Please join me in silent tribute to Jerry Umanos, MD, a Lawndale Christian Healthcare pediatrician who is the American doctor cited in today’s news as being murdered at Cure Hospital in Afghanistan. Dr. Umanos, a longtime attending physician at Mount Sinai Hospital who held admitting privileges through 2011, worked with Cure for the last five years. According to Art Jones, MD, founder and former CEO of Lawndale Christian Health, Dr. Umanos understood the risks of serving at Cure and was committed to providing care, given that one in four children in Afghanistan do not survive to age five.

While in Afghanistan, Dr. Umanos taught in the only family practice residency program in the country.

He is survived by a wife and three children.
