It is with great sadness that Sinai Health System shares the passing of Steve Whitman, PhD, long time director of Sinai Urban Health Institute, who died yesterday.

Dr. Whitman was a humanitarian, social justice advocate and a giant in the fields of urban epidemiology and translational research. The work he directed through Sinai Urban Health Institute has set the stage for broad application of life changing community-based processes, forerunners of what the nation now knows as expectations in healthcare reform. Specifically, he and his associates defined the difference in breast cancer mortality for black versus white women in Chicago and other metro US areas. The epidemiologists and community health workers through his leadership go block by block to improve the lives of individuals in some of Chicago’s most challenged communities and reduce the impacts of chronic conditions such as breast cancer, diabetes and asthma.

Without a doubt, Steve’s legacy will continue in the communities of Sinai and through the many lives he has touched.
