Chicago, July 29, 2013   Today the Sisters of St. Casimir symbolically transferred the mission of Holy Cross Hospital to Sinai Health System. Like the communities Holy Cross and Sinai serve, the ceremony included a diversity of races, ethnicities and faiths coming together to acknowledge the importance of quality healthcare for the communities of west and southwest Chicago.

The mission transfer ceremony went beyond the legal confirmation of Holy Cross Hospital becoming part of Sinai Health System. As Lori Pacura, former chief nursing officer for Sinai and now senior administrator for Holy Cross Hospital, observed, “It was a beautiful and moving tribute to the histories of both organizations and our shared missions to care for our underserved communities. It was refreshing to see hospital, spiritual, community and political leaders joining to recognize this wonderful partnership we have created.”

In his remarks, United States Senator, Richard Durbin described the merging of Holy Cross Hospital with Sinai Health System in terms of caring for people and communities, saying he expected to see great things come from it.

About the Holy Cross Hospital joining Sinai Health System

January 16, 2013, Sinai Health System and Holy Cross Hospital announced the successful completion of a review and approval process that would enable Holy Cross Hospital to join Sinai Health System. Sinai and Holy Cross Hospital are organizations with strong legacies of caring and service that span over nine decades. The institutions share a mission to serve many of Chicago’s most economically challenged communities by providing essential access to high quality and compassionate healthcare and social services for a large number of individuals living on Chicago’s west, south, southwest and near north sides. As a member of Sinai Health System, Holy Cross Hospital remains a Catholic hospital and the Sisters of St. Casimir continue as its religious sponsor. With the merger, Sinai Health System, a Chicago-based private, not-for-profit organization is comprised of seven member organizations: Mount Sinai Hospital, Holy Cross Hospital, Sinai Children’s Hospital, Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital, Sinai Medical Group, Sinai Community Institute and Sinai Urban Health Institute. The system has over 800 physicians on its hospital medical staffs, 695 licensed beds, 100,000+ annual emergency department patient visits and eight physician residency training programs. Sinai is an affiliate of the Jewish United Fund/Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago.
